(ERP), Also known as Electronic Toll Collection, automates toll payments on roads, bridges, and tunnels, enabling vehicles to pass without stopping or slowing. Utilizing technologies like GNSS, ANPR, microwave (DSRC), radio (RFID), and eTicketing, ETC systems identify vehicles and process tolls via user-selected payment methods. 


Used to charge drivers for entering/driving in urban areas, using electronic tolling. Fees depend on time, congestion, and vehicle emissions to reduce congestion, improve air quality, encourage public/alternative transport within densely populated urban areas, and to fund infrastructure. There are following types of city & urban charging systems:

Congestion Charging – A toll system to cut traffic by charging fees for entering busy urban zones during peak times, aiming to discourage travel in congested areas (typically busy urban centres).

Transit Charging – Collects tolls to support transport infrastructure, affecting travel patterns and reducing congestion. Revenue from tolls funds construction, operation, and maintenance, offsetting costs and ensuring infrastructure remains safe and functional.

Pollution Charging – Charges vehicles based on emissions to enter specific areas, aiming to improve air quality and reduce congestion. Higher emissions result in higher fees, while cleaner vehicles get discounts, encouraging the use of low-emission vehicles.

Low Emission Zones – Specific geographical areas within a city where access is restricted or regulated on the basis of vehicle emissions


Electronic Toll Service (ETS) streamlines toll collection across regions and countries, allowing vehicles to use a single on-board unit and contract for payments in any country. It enables seamless cross-border tolling, reduces administrative work, and integrates toll services within regions and countries, facilitating easier navigation and use of the same device and account for highways, urban, and parking charges.   


Ensures compliance with toll payment obligations and road safety regulations through enforcement measures and penalties. It focuses on ensuring drivers and vehicle owners fulfil their toll obligations while also improving road safety and preventing accidents.  

Toll enforcement utilizes ANPR systems to capture license plate images and cross-reference databases for non-compliant vehicles, complemented by DSRC technology for on-board unit reading. Integration of Laser and Lidar technologies enhances precision in distance and vehicle classification measurements. Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) technology detects overloaded vehicles, ensuring accurate toll assessment and infrastructure protection. AI and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms identify anomalies in transaction data, flagging toll evasion or misuse. These technologies reduce manual labor, expedite enforcement processes, and enable real-time identification of toll offenders
